Advantages of business broadband

Business broadband packages differ from consumer broadband packages in a number of ways since consumer broadband packages do not often have all the features that are useful for the average business.

One difference between these packages can be the priority access on the network. Business internet traffic will usually have priority over other users on the same line and this can make a big difference to the performance and the experience received.
Further differences between the broadband packages are focused around the features of the product and include the following:
  • Support: Prioritised support is offered to businesses as well as FREE helpdesk calls and 24/7 availability. This often means that calls are answered much quicker and by higher skilled staff, with wait times of seconds rather than minutes.
  • Security: Business broadband packages often include advanced security features including firewalls, anti-virus and anti-spam. These are usually of a better quality than the consumer packages and these are often vital for a business as a virus could infect your entire network and computer and do significant damage as well as stop your business in your tracks.
  • Backup: FREE dial up as a backup to your ADSL service can often be provided with business broadband.
  • Upload speeds: Average upload speeds tend to have a maximum of around 448Kbps, but many business broadband packages have higher speeds, such as 832Kbps.
  • VPN Access: Some consumer broadband packages dont allow VPN access which is what enables you to connect to your office network. Therefore if you need this then you are better off with a business broadband package.
  • Talk packages: Some providers offer businesses FREE calls with their packages.
  • IP Addresses: Whilst consumer broadband packages have dynamic IP addresses, business broadband packages usually offer free static IP addresses. These are required in order to receive emails direct to your PC without the use of a host (e.g. Hotmail) or if you want to run your own website.
  • Download allowances: You can get improved download allowances. When you upload information to your servers or website, it will use up low download allowances pretty quickly and while your unlimited business package could still be subject to a fair usage policy, ISPs know that business users tend to need higher download allowances and will accommodate this.
  • Email addresses and web space: You get free email addresses and often business broadband packages will give you dedicated website domains.
  • Hardware: Higher quality routers or modems can be provided, such as wireless routers or in some cases managed routers.
  • VOIP: FREE Voice over IP (internet protocol) lines can often be included with business broadband packages, but are unlikely to be included with consumer broadband
